Bangkok Declared Disaster Zone as Heavy Rain Causes Widespread Flooding

Bangkok has been declared a disaster-affected zone after more than 24 hours of continuous heavy rainfall caused widespread flooding across Thailand’s capital.

Residents woke on Saturday to flooded roads in several parts of the city, while authorities warned that further heavy to very heavy rain was expected over the weekend.

According to Reuters, some areas of Bangkok received more than 150 mm of rainfall during the period of continuous rain. The heavy downpours have disrupted travel, inundated roads and increased concerns about further flooding.

Bangkok Declared Disaster-Affected Zone

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt declared the capital a disaster-affected zone on September 26 as flooding affected several areas of the city.

The governor said the situation posed risks to people’s lives as well as potential damage to public and private property.

The declaration allows authorities and emergency agencies to respond more quickly in affected areas as flooding continues.

Heavy Rainfall Causes Widespread Flooding

Bangkok experienced more than 24 hours of continuous rainfall, with some parts of the city recording rainfall above 150 mm.

The weather agency forecast thunderstorms and heavy to very heavy rain over the weekend, raising concerns that existing flooding could worsen.

Videos shared on social media showed cars partially submerged in floodwater, while emergency services were assisting people in affected areas.

Residents Near Canals Urged to Move Belongings

Authorities issued an emergency advisory for residents living near canals, asking them to move their belongings to higher ground because of the risk of rising water levels.

Bangkok’s extensive canal network plays an important role in managing rainwater, but prolonged rainfall can increase pressure on the city’s drainage system.

A shelter has also been opened by the Bangkok City Administration for people who need to evacuate from affected areas.

Further Rain Remains a Concern

The immediate concern for authorities is the possibility of additional heavy rainfall.

Thailand’s weather agency forecast thunderstorms and heavy to very heavy rain over the weekend. Continued rainfall could increase water levels and make travel more difficult in already flooded parts of Bangkok.

Authorities are monitoring the situation and providing assistance where required.
