Disclaimer

This page explains the limits of what Tamrah News can promise about the material we publish. We stand behind our reporting and we work to get it right. But readers should understand what our content is and what it is not before they rely on it. The points here apply to our website and newsletters and social media accounts. They sit alongside the terms on our Legal page.

News is a record of what was known at the time

A news story describes events as our reporters understood them when the story was written. Facts change. Officials revise figures and courts reverse decisions and witnesses remember more. We update stories when we learn something new and we mark the time of the change. We cannot guarantee that a story you read some time ago still reflects the latest position. Check the date at the top of any story and look for updates before you draw conclusions or act on what you read.

In fast moving situations such as accidents and disasters and elections early reports are sometimes incomplete or wrong. We try to label breaking stories as developing and we correct errors as soon as we find them. Our approach to mistakes is set out on our Corrections Policy page.

Accuracy and completeness

We check the facts in our work using the methods described on our Journalistic Ethics page. Even so we cannot promise that every story is free from error or that it covers every angle of a subject. A story reflects choices about what to include and what to leave out because no report can hold everything. If you notice a mistake please tell us. We would rather hear from you than leave an error in place.

Numbers and statistics in our stories often come from government bodies or companies or research groups. We identify the source when we can. We check the figures that we are able to check but we cannot always confirm data that was produced by someone else. Where figures are estimates or have been disputed we try to say so.

Opinion and commentary

Opinion pieces and editorials and letters and guest contributions are marked clearly. They express the views of the people who wrote them. Those views are not the views of Tamrah News unless the piece is labelled as an editorial. Guest pieces are checked for factual accuracy but we do not endorse the conclusions that their authors draw. Reading an opinion piece on our site is not a sign that we agree with it.

Sponsored content and advertising

Our pages carry advertising and sometimes sponsored content. These are labelled and kept apart from our news coverage. The claims made in them belong to the advertiser. We do not check or approve those claims and we are not responsible for them. A product or service that appears in an advertisement or a sponsored piece is not recommended by us. You should do your own research before you buy anything or sign up for anything that you see advertised. Details about how advertising relates to our funding are on our Ownership and Funding page.

No professional advice

Our stories about health and law and money and property and education are written to inform readers about matters of public interest. They are not advice for your own situation. A report on a new medicine or a change in tax rules or a court ruling cannot take your circumstances into account. Please speak to a qualified doctor or lawyer or accountant or other professional before you make a decision that affects your health or your rights or your finances. Do not delay seeking help or ignore advice you have been given because of something you read here.

If you or someone you know is in danger or needs urgent medical help contact the emergency services at once. A news site is not a substitute.

Photographs and video

We use images to show what happened and we check them as described in our standards. Some images come from wire services or from members of the public and we cannot always confirm every detail of how they were made. A photograph captures one moment from one point of view and does not always tell the whole story. Captions describe what we understood at the time of publication. We correct captions when we learn that they were wrong.

Comments and material from readers

Comments and posts from readers express the views of those individuals. We do not check them before they appear and we cannot guarantee that they are true or lawful. We remove comments that break our rules when we become aware of them but we are not responsible for what readers write. Tips and photographs that readers send us are treated as leads and not as proven fact until we have confirmed them.

Links to other websites

Our stories link to other sites to give readers more information or to show our sources. We do not run those sites and we cannot control what they say or how they handle your information. A link does not mean that we agree with the content or that we approve of its owner. Pages can change or disappear after we link to them. We are not responsible for anything you find or any loss you suffer on a site that we do not operate.

Availability of the site

We aim to keep our website and newsletters running without interruption. Problems with hosting or networks or software are outside our full control. We may need to take the site offline for maintenance or to fix a fault. We do not promise that the site will always be available or that it will be free of viruses or other harmful code. Please use up to date security software on your own devices.

Limits on our responsibility

To the extent that the law allows Tamrah News and its owner and staff and contributors are not liable for loss or damage that arises from your use of the site or your reliance on its content. This includes indirect loss and loss of money and loss of data. Nothing on this page removes any right that you have under the law that cannot be removed. Nothing here limits responsibility for fraud or for harm that the law does not permit us to exclude.

Views of staff on personal accounts

Members of our staff may use social media in a personal capacity. What they post there is their own and does not speak for the newsroom. Staff follow our conflict of interest rules on all accounts. If you see a post by a reporter that you think raises a concern about our independence send it to us and we will look into it.

Names and trademarks

Names of other companies and products and organisations that appear in our stories belong to their owners. Their appearance on our site does not imply any link with us or any endorsement by them. Our own name and logo may not be used without our written permission.

Changes to this disclaimer

We may update this page when our practice or the law changes. The date at the top shows when it was last revised. Continued use of the site after a change means that you accept the revised page. Earlier versions are available on request.
