Cookie Policy

This policy explains how Tamrah News uses cookies and similar technologies when you visit our website or read our newsletters. It tells you what each kind of cookie does and who places it. It also explains how to accept or refuse them. It should be read together with the privacy section of our Legal page.

What cookies are

A cookie is a small text file that a website saves on your phone or computer when you visit. It lets the site recognise your device on later visits. Some cookies are needed to make a page work. Others remember your choices or count how many people read a story or help show advertising. Cookies set by us are called first party cookies. Cookies set by another company that provides a service on our pages are called third party cookies.

We also use similar tools that work in the same way. These include small image files in emails that tell us whether a message was opened and pieces of code on our pages that measure how readers use the site. When we say cookies in this policy we mean all of these tools.

Why we use them

We use cookies for a few clear reasons. We need some of them to keep the site secure and working. We use others to remember settings such as your preferred text size or whether you have closed a notice. We use measurement cookies to learn which stories people read and where readers come from so that we can decide where to put our reporting effort. Advertising helps pay for our journalism and some cookies support that. We explain our funding on our Ownership and Funding page.

We do not use cookies to build a profile of your private life. We do not let advertisers see which stories you read in a form that identifies you. We never share the names of subscribers or donors with advertisers.

The names of providers and the exact cookies they set may change as we change the services we use. We keep a current list available on request at [privacy email address].

Essential cookies

These cookies are needed to run the site. They protect against fraud and keep your connection safe and let you move between pages without losing your place. They also record whether you have made a choice about the other types of cookie so that we do not ask you again on every visit. You cannot switch these off through our settings. You can block them in your browser but parts of the site will stop working.

Preference cookies

These cookies remember choices you make. If you change the text size or dismiss a banner the cookie lets us respect that on your next visit. Without them the site still works but you may need to repeat your choices each time.

Measurement cookies

These cookies tell us how many people visit and which stories they read and how long they stay. They help us see which topics matter to the community and which pages are hard to use. The reports we receive are based on grouped data. We do not use them to follow named individuals and we do not combine them with your subscriber details.

Advertising cookies

Ads on our site are placed by our advertising partners. Their cookies may record that your device has visited our site and may use that to show you ads that are likely to interest you on our pages or elsewhere. They may also measure whether an ad was seen. Advertisers do not buy or influence our coverage and the cookies do not give them any access to our newsroom or to information that you give us when you subscribe or write to us. If you refuse advertising cookies you will still see ads but they will be less closely matched to your interests.

Embedded content

Some of our stories include videos or maps or posts from other platforms. When you view or play this content the platform may set cookies and may collect information about your visit under its own policy. We do not control those cookies. We suggest you read the policy of the platform concerned. If you decline embedded content cookies the item may appear as a link or a blank space.

How to manage your choices

The first time you visit our site you will see a notice that asks you to accept or decline cookies other than the essential ones. You can change your mind at any time using the cookie settings link at the bottom of every page. Your choice is saved in a cookie so that we can respect it.

You can also control cookies through your browser. Most browsers let you see which cookies are stored and delete them or block them from all sites or from particular sites. The steps differ by browser. Look in the settings or privacy menu of Chrome or Safari or Firefox or Edge or whichever browser you use. The help section of your browser will give instructions. On a phone or tablet you may also find advertising controls in the main device settings.

Many browsers offer a signal that asks sites not to track you. Because there is no agreed standard for how sites should respond we treat the signal as a request to decline measurement and advertising cookies where we are able to detect it.

If you delete cookies or switch them off you may need to enter your choices again on each visit. Some features such as signing in to your account may not work.

Cookies in email

Our newsletters may contain a small image that tells us whether you opened the message and whether you clicked on a link. We use this information to see which newsletters readers find useful and to remove inactive addresses from our list. You can stop this by turning off image loading in your email program. You can leave a newsletter at any time using the link at the bottom of every message.

Children

Our site is meant for a general audience and is not directed at young children. We do not knowingly use advertising cookies to target children. If you believe a child has given us personal information please write to us and we will delete it.

Changes to this policy

We may change this policy when we add a new service or when the law changes. When we make an important change we will tell you on the site and ask for your choice again if the law requires it. The date at the top of this page shows when it was last updated. Earlier versions are available on request.
