Copyright

Original reporting takes time and money to produce. Copyright is one of the ways that a newsroom protects its work so that it can keep doing it. This page explains who owns what on our site and what you may do with it. It also describes how to ask for permission and how to tell us if you think we have used your work without permission. It should be read together with the copyright section of our Legal page.

Who owns our content

The stories and headlines and photographs and graphics and maps and video and audio that Tamrah News publishes are protected by copyright. In most cases the copyright belongs to Tamrah Global LLC or to the staff and freelancers who created the work under an agreement that passes the rights to us. Some material belongs to other people and is used with their permission. Those items carry a credit line or a note that names the owner.

Our name and logo and the design of our site are also protected. You may not use them in a way that suggests we have approved or sponsored you or your work.

What you may do

We want our reporting to reach as many people as possible and we are glad when readers share it. You may do the following without asking us first:

  • Read our stories and print a copy for your own use
  • Share a link to any story on any website or messaging service or social media platform
  • Quote a short extract from a story in your own writing or in a discussion or in a review provided that you name Tamrah News as the source and link to the original page
  • Show a story to a class or a small group as part of teaching

When you quote us please use only as much as you need to make your point. A few sentences is reasonable. A whole story or most of one is not. Your quote should not replace the need to read the original. The law in some countries allows limited use of copyrighted work for purposes such as criticism or news reporting or research. These rules differ from place to place and we cannot tell you whether a particular use is covered. If you are unsure ask us or take advice.

What you may not do without permission

Please do not do any of the following unless we have agreed in writing:

  • Copy a full story or a photograph or a graphic or a video and publish it on another website or in print
  • Translate a story and publish the translation as your own or as ours
  • Rewrite our stories closely enough that the result follows our reporting without adding any of your own
  • Sell or license our content or include it in a product that you sell
  • Collect our content in bulk by automated means or build a database from it
  • Use our content to train or improve a system that produces competing news material
  • Remove or change a credit line or a copyright notice
  • Present our work as if you wrote it

Sharing a story by pasting its text into a group chat or a social media post is a form of copying and is not covered by the permission to share links. Please share the link instead. It sends readers to the story and it gives you the benefit of any updates or corrections we make later.

How to credit us

When you quote or refer to our work the best credit is the words “Tamrah News” next to a link to the story. If you cannot link in the format you are using say “According to Tamrah News” and give the title of the story and the date. Credit the individual reporter or photographer if their name appears with the work and you have room to do so.

Asking for permission and licensing

If you want to republish or adapt our work write to info@tamrahnews.com. Tell us which story or image you want to use and where it will appear and for how long and whether it will be used for a commercial purpose. Send us a link to the place where your work will appear if it already exists. We aim to reply within ten working days.

We charge a fee for commercial use. We usually give permission without charge to schools and universities and community groups and charities and to individual readers who want to use our work for teaching or for a public benefit. We may attach conditions such as a requirement to show a credit and a link or to publish any correction we make.

Permission for one use is not permission for others. If your plans change you need to ask again.

Photographs and images from other sources

Some of the images on our site come from wire services and photo agencies and members of the public. These carry their own credit and may have their own terms. We cannot give you permission to reuse them and you will need to ask the owner. If you are not sure who owns an image on our site write to us and we will point you to the right person where we can.

Images of a person or a private place may also involve rights that are separate from copyright. These include the right to privacy and the right to control commercial use of a likeness. Having permission from us does not cover those rights.

Material you send us

When you send us a tip or a photograph or a guest piece or a letter you keep your copyright. You give us a licence to publish it as described on our Guest Contributions and Submit a News Tip pages. You promise that the work is yours or that you have permission to share it. Please do not send us material that you took from someone else. If you do we may refuse to publish it and we may remove it later if we find out.

How we treat other people’s work

We follow the same rules that we ask readers to follow. We credit sources and link to original reporting from other news organisations when we rely on it. We quote briefly and only when it is needed. We do not copy text from other publications or from press releases without saying where it came from. We do not use photographs without permission or a licence. Our standards on plagiarism are on our Journalistic Ethics page and a breach of them can end a person’s employment with us.

If you think we have used your work without permission

We take these claims seriously. If you believe that something on our site copies your work and the use is not allowed by law or by a licence write to [legal notices address] with the following information:

  • Your name and contact details
  • A description of your original work and proof that you own it
  • The link to the page on our site that you object to
  • A statement that you believe in good faith that the use is not authorised
  • A statement that the information you have given is accurate and that you are the owner or are acting for the owner

A legal adviser will review the claim and we will reply within ten working days. If the claim is valid we will remove the material or fix it or get a licence. If we think the use is allowed we will tell you why. We may pass your notice to the person who supplied the material so that they can respond. Please do not make a claim that you know to be false. A person who does so may be responsible for the harm it causes.

We may stop working with any contributor or supplier who repeatedly gives us material that they do not have the right to use.

Archive and older stories

Our archive remains protected by copyright just as new stories are. The age of a story does not change the rules on this page. Stories are kept online for the public record and are corrected under our Corrections Policy but they are not placed in the public domain.

Changes to this page

We may update this page when the law or our practice changes. The date at the top shows when it was last revised. Earlier versions are available on request.
