Russia Holds Final Stage of Center-2026 Military Exercises With Chinese and CSTO Troops

Russia Holds Final Stage of Center-2026 Military Exercises With Chinese and CSTO Troops

Russia has concluded the main phase of its Center-2026 strategic military exercises, bringing together tens of thousands of troops from Russia, China and members of the Moscow-led Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) in one of the largest multinational drills held by the Russian military this year. Russian President Vladimir Putin observed the final stage of the exercises in the Chelyabinsk region of the Ural Mountains on Friday, October 2.

According to Russian officials, the exercises involved more than 47,000 personnel operating across 11 training grounds and in the Caspian Sea. Around 6,000 troops took part in the concluding phase at the Chebarkul training area, where live-fire operations, armored maneuvers, drone deployments and combined land-air operations were demonstrated.

Military contingents from Belarus, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, all members of the CSTO, participated alongside troops from China, Mongolia and Pakistan. Russian and Chinese forces conducted joint operations during the exercises, reflecting continuing defense cooperation between Moscow and Beijing. Delegations from dozens of countries attended as observers, according to Russian statements.

Drones and Modern Warfare Featured Prominently

Russian officials and participating military personnel said Center-2026 placed significant emphasis on unmanned systems and battlefield technologies developed during recent conflicts.

Reports from the exercise indicated extensive use of drones, electronic warfare equipment and robotic systems. Russian figures cited more than 600 unmanned aerial vehicles and over 60 robotic platforms being used during the drills. Analysts have noted that the exercises appeared to incorporate lessons learned from Russia’s war in Ukraine, particularly in the use of drones, counter-drone tactics and small-unit operations.

Chinese military personnel participating in the exercise said the drills provided experience operating in complex battlefield environments involving multiple nations and extensive use of unmanned systems. Chinese officers highlighted joint operational planning and live-fire training as key elements of the exercise.

Putin Observes Final Stage

President Vladimir Putin visited the exercise area and inspected military equipment, including drone systems used by Russian forces. His appearance at Center-2026 came amid heightened tensions between Russia and NATO and continuing fighting in Ukraine.

Russian officials described the drills as defensive exercises intended to practice responses to potential attacks and improve coordination among allied forces. NATO countries have previously described Russian large-scale military exercises as events they monitor closely due to their size and strategic significance.

What Is the CSTO?

The Collective Security Treaty Organization is a security alliance led by Russia that includes Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan among its members. CSTO forces conducted parallel exercises, including the Interaction-2026 and Echelon-2026 drills, alongside Center-2026. These focused on joint operations, logistics and rapid-reaction force coordination.

Regional Significance

Center-2026 is part of Russia’s cycle of large strategic exercises that are held periodically across different military districts. This year’s drills highlighted Moscow’s military partnerships with China and several Eurasian states while showcasing growing reliance on drones, robotic systems and electronic warfare technologies.

The exercises do not indicate any immediate military operation, but they provide insight into how Russia and its partners are adapting to modern warfare and strengthening military cooperation amid broader geopolitical tensions.
