What Happened in Saudi Arabia?
Saudi Arabia intercepted and destroyed three ballistic missiles launched from Yemen by the Houthi group, according to the Saudi-led coalition supporting Yemen’s internationally recognized government. The missiles were reportedly targeting Khamis Mushait, a city in the southwestern Asir region of Saudi Arabia.
Saudi authorities said the interceptions took place during the early hours, with one missile intercepted at around 3 a.m. after two other missiles had already been destroyed. Several Houthi drones were also reportedly intercepted during the attacks.
The latest incident adds to a series of missile and drone threats directed at Saudi territory as tensions between the Kingdom and Yemen’s Houthi movement continue to rise.
Was Riyadh Hit by the Missiles?
The latest confirmed missile launches were directed toward Khamis Mushait in the Asir region, not Riyadh.
However, Riyadh has also been targeted in previous incidents during the recent escalation. On September 19, Saudi authorities reported intercepting a Houthi ballistic missile that was launched toward the Saudi capital.
The distinction is important because reports of missile activity in Saudi Arabia have involved different locations and should not be treated as a single incident.
Were There Any Casualties or Damage?
Saudi Civil Defense reported that debris from one intercepted ballistic missile fell in Ahad Rafidah in the Asir region.
The debris injured one person and caused property damage, including damage to several vehicles and a prayer room inside a building. Saudi authorities also reported that another Houthi projectile struck a school in Najran, causing material damage but no reported casualties.
The incidents show that even when incoming missiles are intercepted before reaching their intended targets, falling debris can still pose risks to people and property on the ground.
Why Are Houthi Attacks Increasing?
The latest missile launches come amid a wider escalation between Saudi Arabia and the Houthi movement in Yemen.
Saudi Arabia has reported repeated missile and drone threats from Yemen, while fighting and political tensions have also intensified inside the region. The developments have raised renewed concerns about the security of Saudi territory and important regional routes.
The Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb Strait remain particularly important because they are major routes for international shipping and energy transportation. Any wider escalation in the area could therefore have consequences beyond the immediate conflict zone.
What Happens Next?
The latest attacks are expected to increase security concerns across southern Saudi Arabia and add to the wider regional tensions involving the Houthis.
Saudi Arabia continues to rely on its air-defense systems to intercept incoming missiles and drones, while diplomatic efforts are also being discussed among countries involved in the region.
Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye are expected to hold an emergency meeting in Riyadh under the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement to discuss the recent Houthi attacks and possible engagement with the group.
For now, the confirmed development is that Saudi air defenses intercepted three ballistic missiles launched from Yemen toward Khamis Mushait, while debris from one intercepted missile injured a person and caused property damage in the Asir region.
