Two helicopters collide in Nepal on Tuesday, leaving one Indian tourist dead and others injured as both aircraft prepared to land at Pheriche in the Everest region. According to the District Police Office in Solukhumbu, the Fishtail Air and Air Dynasty helicopters struck each other at about 8:11 am local time, as reported by ANI, citing The Kathmandu Post. The cause has not been confirmed.

Nepal Helicopter Collision Details at Pheriche

Pheriche lies on the route to Everest Base Camp, about 150 km northeast of Kathmandu, according to the Press Trust of India. The village falls under Ward 4 of Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality in Solukhumbu district.

Connected to India reported that Nepal Police confirmed the Nepal helicopter collision in a post on X. The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal, known as CAAN, told Xinhua the aircraft collided at a helipad at around 8:15 am. Video of the incident spread quickly online, ANI reported.

Who Was Killed and Injured

According to the Press Trust of India, Police Inspector Mausam Tamang identified the dead man as Vasanth Kumar Balaramaramadu, aged 47, an Indian national who was travelling on the Fishtail Air helicopter. Shailesh Krishna Patel, aged 49, an Indian origin resident of New Zealand, was injured on the same aircraft.

The agency also reported that both Nepali pilots, Rabindra Prajapati and Prajwal KC, were hurt and taken to Kathmandu for treatment. Early police statements listed one injured person, while later reports counted three injured, including both pilots. Police said the Indian tourist’s body was taken to a hospital in Lukla.

Why Did the Helicopters Collide in Nepal?

No official cause has been announced. CAAN information officer Gyanendra Bhul told Xinhua that the authority had preliminary information that the rotors of the two helicopters struck each other during landing. He said CAAN was making further inquiries.

Newswire reported that Nepal’s aviation authorities have launched an investigation. ANI, citing The Kathmandu Post, said police were still working to confirm how many passengers were on board both helicopters.

Rescue and Medical Response

Newswire reported that emergency teams were sent to Pheriche, with helicopters helping in the rescue and evacuation work. The Press Trust of India said Patel was flown to Mediciti Hospital in Kathmandu on a Prabhu Helicopter aircraft.

Helicopters carry out much of the rescue work in the Everest region, where road access is limited or missing. That is why the Solukhumbu helicopter accident drew quick attention from officials and travel operators.

A Region Familiar With Aviation Accidents

Nepal has a large private helicopter industry that flies tourists and supplies to remote areas, according to AFP reporting carried by Gulf Times. The country has a long record of air accidents in its mountains.

In April 2019, Scroll reported, a Summit Air plane lost control while taking off at Lukla and hit two parked helicopters, killing at least three people. In August 2024, Deccan Herald reported that an Air Dynasty helicopter crashed in Nuwakot district, killing all five people on board. That crash is a separate incident from Tuesday’s collision, and no link between them has been reported.

What Happens Next

CAAN has said it is gathering more details. The reports reviewed did not include statements from Fishtail Air or Air Dynasty. Authorities have not said whether a formal investigation panel has been formed, or when findings might be released. The Indian embassy’s response was also not found in the reports reviewed.

Conclusion

The Nepal helicopter collision at Pheriche has left one Indian tourist dead and raised fresh questions about flight safety in the Everest region. People searching for news on helicopters collide in Nepal, the Pheriche helicopter collision, a Solukhumbu helicopter accident, the Fishtail Air and Air Dynasty collision, or an Everest region helicopter crash should rely on official statements from CAAN and Nepal Police as the inquiry continues.
