Pralay Missile Test: India Flight Tests Quasi Ballistic Missile Off Odisha Coast

Pralay Missile Test: India Flight Tests Quasi Ballistic Missile Off Odisha Coast

The Pralay missile test off the Odisha coast met all objectives, DRDO said, with Pralay missile range details and induction plans now in focus. Pakistan’s recent Fatah 2 ER and Army Rocket Force Command tests form the regional backdrop.

DRDO says the Pralay missile met all objectives in a user evaluation trial, and officials say induction into the armed forces is now imminent.

The Pralay missile test took place on Thursday, when India’s Defense Research and Development Organization fired the missile from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the Odisha coast. The Statesman reported that the launch happened at around 11.10 am and that all objectives were met, as confirmed by instruments at the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh announced the result on X.

What DRDO and the Defence Minister Said

According to IANS, Singh said the test was part of user evaluation trials and met all stipulated objectives, as validated by data from range instruments. WION reported that he called the test another significant milestone for India’s indigenous defense capabilities. The Statesman said senior DRDO officials, industry representatives and Defense Forces personnel attended the trial, and that Singh said the missile’s technologies would strengthen operational preparedness against emerging threats.

What Is the Pralay Missile?

The Statesman reported that Research Centre Imarat in Hyderabad and other DRDO laboratories developed the missile, and Bharat Dynamics Limited produced it. It is a short range, surface to surface quasi ballistic missile. Unlike a conventional ballistic missile, a quasi ballistic missile can fly at a lower altitude and change course during flight. The Daily Jagran gives its range as 150 to 500 kilometers. Earlier Ministry of Defense statements said it uses solid propellant and can carry several types of warheads.

Earlier Pralay Missile Tests

PTI reported that India held the first Pralay flight test on December 22, 2021, from the same island off Odisha. All India Radio reported that DRDO conducted two consecutive tests on July 28 and 29, 2025, to validate the missile’s maximum and minimum range.

Will the Pralay Missile Join the Armed Forces?

The Statesman reported that induction into the armed forces is now imminent after this trial. No induction date has been announced.

Pakistan’s Recent Fatah Missile Tests

The News reported that Pakistan test fired an extended version of its ground launched Fatah 4 cruise missile on October 6, 2026. The Tribune in Pakistan reported that the army then tested the Fatah 2 extended range missile, which ISPR calls a hypersonic ballistic missile, on October 13. ISPR said the extended range would improve the army’s ability to engage “deep targets.” Defense Arabia reported that Pakistan’s Army Rocket Force Command carried out both launches and that ISPR did not give the Fatah 4 range.

Is the Pralay Missile Test a Response to Pakistan?

I found no statement from India’s Ministry of Defense or DRDO linking the Pralay missile test to Pakistan’s Fatah launches. Reports on the Indian test describe it as a scheduled user evaluation trial. The Fatah 4 is a cruise missile, so it is not in the same category as Pralay or the Fatah 2 ER.

Conclusion

The Pralay missile test off the Odisha coast met all trial objectives, according to the Defense Minister, and officials say induction is near.
