Trump backs Netanyahu for re-election and warns Iran of fresh American strikes
In a Sunday post, Donald Trump endorsed Benjamin Netanyahu and said the United States could soon finish the job against Iran. Tehran answered by daring him to try, and by accusing the Israeli prime minister of steering America into war.
Donald Trump endorsed Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday, calling him a great warrior and arguing that Iran has been systematically destroyed, militarily and financially. The United States, he added, could soon finish the job unless Tehran changed course, and if Israelis chose anyone other than Mr Netanyahu, America would have to do the work itself.
Mr Netanyahu thanked the president for what he called an extraordinary endorsement. Separately, he said he had instructed Israel’s security agencies to work towards the fall of the Islamic Republic.
Tehran replied within hours. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi invited Washington to try its luck again, warned that Iran had unfinished business of its own, and accused Mr Netanyahu of dragging America into another war to stay out of prison.
The exchange arrives in the final stretch of an Israeli campaign that polls show to be deadlocked. Mr Trump’s intervention is meant to lift a prime minister whose party has been slipping, but it also binds his electoral fortunes to a war that voters in both countries are weighing against higher fuel prices. Some analysts expect any resumption of American strikes to wait until after the US midterms next month. The war is now eight months old, and neither the threats nor the diplomacy has altered its basic shape.
